I’m back with another random review of a product that was marketed to me on social media! This time it’s a crisp brand called Spudos. Spudos are probably most well known for being on Dragon’s Den (I loved watching this when I was younger, but haven’t watched standard telly in many, many years!), and their product is basically a premium version of those salt & shake crisps we has when we were young (the white bag, with a blue sachet of salt).
I ordered their bundle that came with 500g of unseasoned crisps, a tub and 5 packets of flavouring (Chip Shop Curry, Nooch & Onion, Prawn Cocktail, Salt & Vinegar & Southern Fried Chicken)
What Crisps do you usually have?
I know that usually sharing what kind of crisps and flavours I like would be completely irrelevant and boring to anyone reading this, but ther reason that I want to just take a minute to give you an idea of the kind of crisps I usually eat is because it will give you a better understanding of my tastes, and if you like the same kind of things, you might also have the same experience with these crisps.
As i always say though, taste is subjective. If i like something, you might not. If I don’t like something, you might love it. The point of this website is just to cut through BS marketing and give honest feedback from things that I’ve tried, to stop influencers from being able to convince you into buying crap and you feeling cheated.
So, I would probably say that my favourite crisp brand is Walkers (Or Lays if we are in Spain on holiday!). They are the level of standard that everyone in the UK expects from a crisp. That being said, we do partake in Aldi/Lidl fake versions too, as these are cheap and close enough to Walkers that it justifies it (especially for school snacks!).
I have always loved the flavours of Golden Wonder, but it’s really rare that we buy them because they aren’t as common as walkers, but on occasion I will buy them and realise how much I missed them!
As for flavours, you cannot beat the classic cheese & onion. That is probably the safest and tastiest option and it’s a toss up between that and prawn cocktail for me. Salt & Vinegar I don’t mind, but isn’t usually by first choice.
If we are feeling like a movie night or a treat, we will usually get ourselves some chili sensations. That is about as premium as we get in this house!
Onto the Review!
Okay, let’s dive into the review itself. So from the start, this company makes it clear that they are not cheap, so straight away you know that it’s going to be a bit steep for what it is, but the adverts make these crisps look really, really divine!
Cost
Let’s take a look at the pricing first, before we taste these crisps, as that will probably be the biggest factor that a lot of people will be looking at.
In the starter pack, it came with 500g of unseasoned crisps. If you divide that up into 25g bags (which is usually the Walkers multipack size), you end up with about 20 bags worth of crisps here.
The total cost of this starter pack (with shipping) was £18.43 (this included the 500g of crisps, the tub & 5 sachets of flavour). That works out at roughly 0.92p per multipack bag (or £1.23 per standard 32.5g bag).
That cost along is probably enough so scare most people away, but I took the plunge to test them for you anyway!
Taste Test
Okay, onto the fun part… The tasting! As I said above, we had 5 flavours included in the bundle and myself and my wife were bursting to try them out! After trying all of the flavours, we were left quite confused because some of the flavours were really, really strong (overpowering) and some of the flavours were so lacking in flavour that it was disappointing! It took quite a lot of experimenting to get the balance of the flavours right, but we got there in the end.
I’ll list each of the flavours below with a score and some notes
| Flavour | Score | Comment |
| Chip Shop Curry | 5/10 | Very strong flavour, but not quite what I was hoping for. It tastes very like a powdered version of curry, but it didn’t really translate to crisp flavour for me |
| Nooch & Onion | 8/10 | This was the classic cheese & onion flavour. It was quite weak though, so we had to put more powder in with less crisps for it to taste nice |
| Prawn Cocktail | 3/10 | For prawn cocktail being one of my favourites, this one was far too potent (even with less powder and more crisps). It wasn’t like the traditional prawn cocktail crisps that we know and love |
| Salt & Vinegar | 3/10 | This one was really weak, to the point that we weren’t sure if the powder was really adding anything to it! Once we got the balance a bit better (but still weak), it was okay. |
| Southern Fried Chicken | 1/10 | Just wasn’t for me, I took two crisps and gave up. Wasn’t quite what I was hoping for. |
Final thoughts & Would you recommend?
I suppose with this one you are paying for an experience of shaking your crisps and tayloring it to your tastes, but if i’m being honest, I will never order again. I’m not quite sure who their target market is other that people who have money to burn.
Making the crisps was fun for the first couple, but then it just got tedious. So it isn’t for people who want to just eat crisps
It isn’t for people who are working class like us, as it’s really expensive for what you get
Maybe this kind of thing would be good for parties or gatherings as an ice breaker or something, but I don’t imaging there are a lot of people who come back for a second round.
In all, I wouldn’t recommend it for people like myself… but I must not be their target market (even though they heavily advertise to me!)
I hope this review has helped you, and if it did. Please check out my other NO BS reviews here and if you want to help spur me on, I would love it if you signed up to my mailing list below!
