My name’s John. I was born in 1989, which means I had a front row seat to what I believe was the greatest era in history. The 90s and early 00s gave us the best cartoons, sweets, games and a blissfil unawareness of how good we really had it!
So what is Geeky Gorevan?
Geeky Gorevan started as somewhere for me to store my hyper-fixations, like when I got really into collecting Monster in My Pocket figures. I always focus on one project, then completely lose interest… So this was a way of documenting that process so that it didn’t feel like it was in vain!
The site has since evolved into something completely different (by accident). I created a page on the website about powdered energy drinks so that I could keep track of what brands and flavours I had tried, because I kept losing the bit of paper I was writing them on. I didn’t expect anyone to actually read that page, but boy was I wrong. Turns out people loved the language I used and how painfully honest I was when something was crap. All of a sudden I had tonnes of people emailing me telling me that they decided not to buy a brand because of what I wrote, and thanked me for saving them money… I took this as a sign that I should be someone that reviews products that people are on the fence about and simply tell the truth (there are a lot of brands out there that are RAGING with me because I have refused cash to say that they are good!). That’s my promise to you, brands can’t buy me. I don’t care how much money they try to throw at me, that’s not the point of the site.
Here are the two things to expect from the site:
No BS Reviews – Most of these pages are live, so I keep them updated as I keep trying new brands and products. Please also let me know if there are specific products that you were on the fence about or that you tried and were crap, despite their marketing being so good that it forced your hand. That is the kind of thing I like to expose!
The Nostalgia hit – I am still really into nostalgia. There is nothing better than that dopamine hit you get when you unlock a memory from your childhood. These aren’t reviews, but just a place that we can reminisce about days gone by.
These two things don’t usually go together, but here they do! I think it’s probably because both are about cutting through the noise. One commercially and one emotionally!
Why should you trust my reviews?
Honestly, I have no reason to lie to you. I’m not a brand who is trying to push my products on you. I’m just a normal (well, probably not normal) guy that just plodds through life like the rest of you. A lot of the reasons that I do pages is really to help out people like me, so that they aren’t caught up in marketing crap and hopefully save you money if you want to try something. That’s it really.
I do have some affiliate relationships with some brands, but that is because I like the brands. (For example, Sneak Energy gives me loyalty points if I refer a friend, so I can get money off). If I think a brand is basically scamming people, I refuse to work with them (you will see in the reviews). Some of the brands reach out to me giving me dogs abuse because of the reviews, but I just laugh at them. Do better and stop scamming people, then you won’t have a problem…
A bit more about me
I would describe myself as an old game (i’m 37). I mostly enjoy games that are older, but occasionally dip into newer stuff when something genuinely catches my attention (you won’t catch me playing GTA or that nonsense). I’m a self confessed energy drink addict, who tries to stay on the powdered energy because it is genuinely better for your health (I’m a big guy, but I was able to come of high blood pressure medication because of the change!).
I have a 6 year old son, who gets to experience 90s toys (he loves them) and some old cartoons (he takes some convincing), and the best wife I could ever wish for (she puts up with my geeky crap and doesn’t moan!).
I don’t do a lot of video content or social media stuff because I’m not very confident, but I might try it out again in the future.
