The Original Creator of Monster in My Pocket

I was recently contacted by Joshua Hurst , whose dad was Gerry Hurst, who claimed to be the original creator of Monster in My Pocket, before selling it to Morrison. Unfortunately for Joshua, it seems that there was a bit of confusion, though, as that wasn’t the case. In fact, Joe Morrison’s daughter Maggie reached out to me to share the real story, along with real emails between the MEG and John Weems, describing how the idea of Monster in my Pocket came about and even some REALLY early sketches!

I was saddened to hear that Joe Morrison had passed away in May this year (2025), so I think it is important to make sure that we get the history straight from the source, without any speculation. Joe and John have created a brand that has connected with so many people around the world, and fans are still so passionate about it today. For that, I thank you!

How it all began

I would like to thank Maggie Morrison, who has so kindly been in contact and offered insights into the history of MIMP for us. Maggie has said that she will dig up some more pieces for us to see, and I will update this page with all the goodies!

Below is an email between MEG and John Weems about how the idea of MIMP came about and what happened in those early moments.

Original Artwork

Well, if you are looking for the original, original artwork, you will not get any closer than this!
Below is a sketch from the front cover of the toy concept!

Joshua Hurst had found some paintings that he believed to be original art from Monster in My Pocket, drawn in charcoal, pencil, pen and pastel and are all signed by Jan Johnson Sheets (one of the original artists). The authenticity and legality around this is a bit spicy, so I wouldn’t advise taking part in any transaction without the express authorisation of MEG please, folks.

For those interested, below is a picture of the werewolf that Joshua had found:

There isn’t really any information on the internet about Gerry Hurst, and what his involvement with Monster in my Pocket, but hopefully in time, we will find out more about if he was involved in some part as a contractor, but what we can say with certain is that he didn’t create MIMP and sell the idea.

If you have any information about Gerry Hurst that you can share with me, please let me know, and I can update this page.
