So if you are anything like me, you aren’t a hardcore weight-lifter, you aren’t exhausting yourself every day, but you are a bit confused with all of the protein jargon and products that you can buy… what should I choose? does it taste nice? Does it work?
Well, I’ve put this page together so that I can try them all out and let you know!
My goal with the protein products is to allow me to lose/maintain weight, but at the core of it, the objectives will likely be the same if you are on this page (taste, effectiveness of feeling full, etc)
It’s important to note that taste is subjective. I’m also not a trained dietician, so this page is simply what I have done myself and intended to help me remember what I’ve already tried. If it helps you out, then that’s a big bonus for me personally!
In the past year or so, I’ve done well with my overall health, including chucking traditional energy drinks and moving onto a powdered form (These reduced my hypertension!) – check out my powdered energy drink guide if that is something you think would help you
I’ll keep this page up to date with all of the different products that I have tried, and basically tell you my opinion on what I think of them! I’ll look at price, effectiveness (keeping you feeling full), and most importantly, taste! Hopefully I will save you some cash by singling out the crap from the treasure!

Why bother? There are already reviews out there!
Yes, there are a lot of reviews out there for these products, BUT trying to wade through the sneaky sponsored posts and adverts was exhausting. I just couldn’t trust anyone else’s opinions… Hopefully, you will benefit from someone who isn’t just out to make money by telling lies to trick you into a purchase!
MyProtein
MyProtein is one of the biggest brands out there in the UK for protein shakes and supplements. The only downside is that there are so many options on their website, that it can be a bit overwhelming! I had tried a bunch of their products, before starting this page (so they aren’t included), but I will keep adding to the list as I give them a try.
Impact Diet Whey by MyProtein

35g of protein & 214 calories per serving (I take a half serving)
The Pros
They taste great! – That is the main point for me because if it isn’t great on the tastebuds, I’m never going to stick to it! It’s difficult for me to pick one flavour, so I end up buying a bunch of samples to choose a flavour each day, depending on my mood.
Feeling Full – I was very sceptical when I started shakes. In my mind, they just wouldn’t fill you up, but in reality, they do a pretty decent job. My advice is not to chug the whole thing, instead take your time with it and it will have a much better effect at keeping you fuller for longer!
Cost Effective – £1.35 per serving (Cheaper on subscription). When you compare the price of this to getting a ready meal or even preparing something, it’s actually really cost-effective (even for the samples). I only use half a serving each morning (with the same amount of milk), so it lasts me twice as long!
The cons
I’ve noticed that with most of the protein powders that I’ve tried, lumps and clumps still form, no matter how much you shake and stir. This product is nowhere near as bad as others I have tried, but unfortunately, they are still there!

Hazelnut Whip by MyProtein

5.2g of protein & 138 calories per bar.
I was really excited to try this one! I’m a massive fan of Kinder Buenos, so to see a protein bar that is a dupe of that, awesome! Unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations. The taste just wasn’t there, and it didn’t keep me full. Gutted.

Grenade
Grenade Protein Bar

21g of protein & 233 calories per bar
If I’m honest, I wasn’t too keen to try the grenade bars as they aren’t exactly low on calories, and they are REALLY expensive! I saw that they were doing some deals on their website that would reduce the price dramatically if you bought them in bulk, but I couldn’t make the commitment without tasting them first. I popped to Morrisons to buy a single bar (£2.75!) and decided to choose the white chocolate Oreo flavour. I was blown away by the taste and how filling this bar was. It really did fill me up because it is so dense and sweet!
Although 232 calories sounds like a lot for one bar of chocolate, if you think about having a full tin of beans & sausages without toast for lunch instead, you are talking 400 calories!
I’ve tried the below flavours:
- White Chocolate Oreo – Tastes amazing. Little pieces of oreo mixed with the ultra sweet white chocolate is a winning combo in my eyes.
- Milk Chocolate Oreo – Inside tastes identical to the white chocolate version, but it isn’t as sweet because it is covered with milk chocolate instead.
- Salted Peanut – Peanuts are a hit and miss with me. I love some, but hate others. This one… i hated. sorry!

HiProtein
M&Ms HiProtein Bar

15g of protein & 192 calories per bar
You can tell that this company are one of the big dogs… The taste alone was excellent. Really dense, chewy chocolatey flavour with M&M pieces throughout!
The fullness feeling wasn’t quite as long as the Oreo bars by grenade, but it wasn’t far off!

Mars Raspberry Smash HiProtein Bar

18g of protein & 189 calories per bar
Now I am a raspberry fiend when it comes to chocolate. A packet of Raspberry ruffles will not last very long in my house, so I though that this would be another excellent fit for my tastes, but I was wrong.
I’m not quite sure how to describe it, but the taste is just wildly off. I was pretty gutted when I took the first bite!

Warrior
Warrior: RAW Protein Flapjack

20.3g of protein & 246 calories per bar
I decided to pick up a white chocolate cranberry flapjack as an alternative to one of the grenade bars, as it was only £1 in B&Ms! The packaging really does tingle the tastebuds but in reality… it’s just a flapjack… Don’t get me wrong, I like flapjacks and it was tasty and filling, but just nothing to write home about in terms of taste!

UFit
Ufit Protein Drink

20g of protein & 132 calories per bottle
Since starting this page, it’s made me more aware of new protein items when I come across them and obviously want to try them out, so you don’t have to! I picked the Rasberry Ripple flavour up for £1 at B&M. The raspberry ripple flavour had 20g of protein (although it looks like some other flavours are 22g).
First impressions were quite pleasant, the flavour is quite a nostalgic one with reminders of ice cream & raspberry sauce or those screwball ice creams with the bubblegum balls at the bottom! The flavour can get a little sickly, which in some instances is a good thing (because it makes you feel fuller!), but in this case, it only really stopped the hunger for about an hour.
I’m not sure if it was psychological though because the drink is so watery, it didn’t really feel like it was filling you up!

Brooklea
Brooklea Protein Drink

20g of protein & 175 calories per bottle
This protein drink is essentially a yogurt drink (with nice little chunks). It tastes really nice and is quite thick, so gives the feeling that it will keep you full, the only downside is there isn’t a lot in the bottle, so while it keeps you full for a bit longer than Ufit, it isn’t quite what you need to get you through a long period!
If you just need a little something to take the edge off and really like yogurt drinks, it’s a cheap and easy option though!
You can pick these up in Aldi for around £1!
ESN
Isoclear Whey Protein Isolate by ESN

25g of protein & 104 calories per serving
I was quite skeptical about clear whey protein because I couldn’t get my head around how a drink (without real substance) could make you feel full! Well, I stand corrected!
In essence, this drink is like a protein squash that you add to water. This isn’t like the standard protein shakes that are like a milkshake. I tried this instead of having breakfast (I sipped throughout the morning) and I managed to get to around 2pm, until I started to get hungry. That’s pretty decent!
I did however need something substantial in my stomach for lunch, so although they are great, they do need to be accompanied by something else in my opinion!
I have a load of these flavour samples, so I’ll list them below with what I thought of the flavour
| Flavour | Rating | Notes |
| Strawberry Lime | 7/10 | First impressions were not too great, but the flavour grew on me the more I sipped it. I did like the somewhat sweet candy aftertaste! |

Designer Whey Protein

22g of protein & 114 calories per serving
I was trying to find an alternative to MyProtein’s Impact Diet Whey and this fit the bill. Low calorie, high in protein, but how will the taste compare? These are about £1 per serving, so are really cost effective to replace a meal!
Here are the flavours I’ve triedL
| Name | Score | Comments |
| Leon’s Cereal | 9/10 | I wasn’t sold by the name, but was pleasantly surprised! I can’t quite place it, but think it is Lion Bar cereal flavour. |
| Dark Cookies & Cream | 8/10 | Basically tastes like an oreo milkshake. Pretty decent and easy to go down! |
| Milk Chocolate | 9/10 | I’m hit and miss with chocolate shakes, but this tasted great! |
| Strawberry Cream | 8/10 | Nice drink, but it didn’t taste of strong enough strawberry for my taste. An easy and pleasant flavour! |
| Banana Milk | 4/10 | This was drinkable, but it reminded me of the old banana medicine that you used to get as a kid. If that is up your street, then go for it |
| Stracciatella | pleasant enough flavour (I believe it is vanilla ice cream). There is a little bit of a funny aftertaste though or it would have scored higher. | pleasant enough flavour (I believe it is vanilla ice cream). Muscle Moose
Dinky Protein Bar by Muscle Moose

11g of protein & 136 calories per bar
I didn’t hold out too much hope for his one, but it actually tasted great! I tried the birthday cake flavour and would certainly buy another for the taste alone. It’s a nice dense consistency with sprinkles, what’s not to love?
It would have been better if the bar was a bit bigger (I get it’s called dinky!) as I can’t help but think that these kinds of things are about the perception of being full too, so even though there was a good amount of protein, it didn’t last as long as I had hoped before feeling hungry again.

Clift
Clift Bar

4.5g protein & 111 calories per bar
I got the crunchy peanut flavour to try and I must say that it tasted tremendous! Really nice peanut butter taste that doesn’t feel artificial (I’m funny with peanut butter sometimes). Essentially this bar is a thick, moist blob that doesn’t look like much (it’s pretty small), but I loved it.
I lasted about 3 hours before I started to feel hungry again!
The only reason this isn’t in the top tier is that if I had a box of these, I would demolish them. Although that is a compliment, I really would end up putting weight on if these were readily available to me!

Vitl Bar

15g of protein & 144 calories per bar
I’m a big fan of the dark chocolate and raspberry combo! The taste wasn’t quite as nice as I had hoped, but it was still very nice. The bar is quite like nougat, but the only downside was that it wasn’t that dense so it didn’t feel like it kept me full for that long (a couple of hours maybe?)

Diet Shakes – Diet Plus

31g of protein & 144 calories per serving
Okay, so this brand I got off of eBay. The marketing looks okay and the flavours tick the boxes, but man… These are absolute garbage! I ordered a mixed order so that I could try all of the flavours and there wasn’t one in there that was bearable! They come in Strawberry Ice Cream, Vanilla Ice Cream, Chocolate Fudge and Banana Milkshake.
It feels like you are drinking kinetic sand! None of them require you to add milk either (only water), which feels like it is just a cheap mix that doesn’t intend to commit to promises of the nice flavours that it boasts. The 31g of protein is impressive, but I think Ant & Dec would deem this drink too cruel so serve in a bush tucker trial!
Skinny Cookie Co
Sugar Free Choc Chip Cookies

1.6g of protein & 96 calories per 2 cookies
Okay, so these aren’t specifically a protein cookie, but they are advertised on weight loss sites. The taste of them isn’t repulsive, don’t get me wrong, but for a cookie… they are pretty poor. They don’t make you feel full. they do have extra fibre however, so they will help you go to the toilet… if you need that!
For context, there is 1.1g of protein and 97 calories for a good old-fashioned Maryland cookie… Just get them instead.

Kind
Kind Protein Bar

12g of protein & 274 calories per bar
I wasn’t expecting these to be anything special because the calorie count is really high and essentially it is a bar of nuts with some chocolate dripped over it. When I tried it however, it actually tasted really nice! It made me feel full for quite a few hours too, but that was because it is so high in calories!
I am a little gutted to be placing this in the squire level, but I just think that although it is effective, there are just so many better alternatives out there for the calories that you are exchanging!

Sneak EATS

Sneak has branched out into the meal replacement space (they are an energy drink company).
My initial reaction was that there was an unpleasant aftertaste. This is almost identical to the aftertaste that you get when drinking Slim-Fast. I don’t want to say chalky, but that is the closest thing I can relate it to. I think this is probably the aftertaste of the oats.
From trying both of these flavours and trying out different strengths, I can say that my preference in taste would be to mix 500ml of milk with half a serving of Sneak EATS. If you use water or follow the instructions of 250ml with a full serving, it is just undrinkable for me.
One of the warnings was that there are a lot of bits in the drink. There are, but this does not detract too much from the drink. I am fussy when it comes to textures, so if it was too much, I wouldn’t touch it!
| Name | Score | Comments |
| Strawberry | 5/10 | This score is based on using a half serving with 500ml of milk. I would score it 0/10 if I was followed the instructions on the recommended serving size and using water. Overall, it wasn’t totally unpleasant, but I wouldn’t ever pick this up again (I’m a big strawberry shake fan too!) |
| Chocolate Brownie | 1/10 | This doesn’t taste anything like the traditional chocolate shakes that we know and love. I appreciate that taste is subjective, but I had to pour this one away after two tastes. |
