The Ultimate Guide to D&D Gadgets and Gifts

It can be a bit overwhelming when it comes to new accessories for your tabletop game, as the recent boom in popularity has opened the door to a lot of companies trying to make some quick cash on items that are pretty poor quality. I thought I would put this page together so that I can share my experience with the bits and pieces that I’ve actually tried and give you my take on them, so that you don’t end up wasting your money on poor quality!

Remember, you don’t need any of these items, but some of them you will probably want! Typically I only really seek out tabletop items to help enhance the game or immerse you in the story, but some of these items are not just practical, they are sure to impress your fellow adventurers. There’s something for everyone on this list!

I’ll also make sure to keep checking back to this list as I try new pieces out! If you have any recommendations, please reach out!

Premium Battle Maps

If you are anything like me, you have tried a load of different ways to make your battles more exciting with makeshift battle maps! We typically just used gridded paper, but it would curl up and send the minis flying, so you had to put candles and cups on the corners to try and stop it from ruining the game.

That however is a thing of the past, my friends, I have found the holy grail of battle maps!

This battle map set comes with three large maps (which are double-sided) with different terrains printed on them. The quality of the maps is really good and they come with whiteboard markers and an eraser, but the best thing about them is the plastic sliders that you attach to the sides of the map when in use… It makes them straight and no way for them to flop and fold to ruin your game!

One of the best things about these maps is that they aren’t really flimsy, so we were able to spread it across the table, without fear that it was going to get damaged if someone were to place their bottle or snacks on it (the map is pretty big).

Here is a video of me showing off the pack so that you can see what I mean!

Spell Casting Template

Is this item a necessity? No. Does it make life easier and take away all of the square counting in every direction, multiple times? Absolutely!

This acrylic board has nearly every spell-casting range on it so all you have to do is hover it over the board to work out who you can catch in your fireball or cone! As I said, you can work this out pretty easily by counting the squares, but it’s always fun to have a device to both save time and make it more visual!

I tried this out with my table for the first time to gauge everyone’s reaction and they all thought it was great!

D&D Dice Bag/Mat 2-in-1

This one is really just a combination of convenience and the cool factor! This fantasy-inspired dice bag looks like a cool D&D item that your character would likely wear, but instead of ammo or coins, you can store your dice in it!

The other cool feature of this bag is that when you open it up fully, it turns into an awesome portable dice tray for you to use at the table (or wherever you are!).

This item isn’t going to be a game changer at your table, but it would make an awesome gift for your tabletop roleplayer (or larper!)

The Time Out Chair

I have the reputation at my table for having the absolute worst luck when it comes to rolling dice, so I had to buy a time-out chair for those naughty dice that are rolling poorly. That will teach them to behave for the next roll! (I have loads of dice sets, so I know it’s really me that is cursed…)

This is a really simple addition to the table that will become a funny tradition that your table adopts, when they roll a nat 1!

Potions of Healing

If you didn’t look at this picture and immediately think ‘That’s pretty cool’, then I’m afraid D&D might just not be for you. These excellent healing potions contain the right amount of dice for you to simply pop the cork and roll when you are using them. Not only does this add excellent flavour to your game, but it also is a visual reminder that you actually have a potion to use! A double win!

Immersive Terrain

I can’t stress enough how awesome these items are at immersing your table into the game! These fantastic pieces of terrain enable the DM to build the scene and give the players a visual of their surroundings. I tried these out at our table and the feedback was amazing! Everyone loved them and it really helped to build excitement for the fight!

We can all use our imaginations to visualise the battlefield (like we have done for a long time!), but if you are able to construct the layout with this set, you will just feed the imagination of the players and can also lead to invite more creative thinking too (which is always awesome!)

One of the other perks of these pieces was for cover. Rogues will know that you are always asking if there is anything nearby that you can hide behind. Well, now you don’t have to ask the question and the DM doesn’t need to answer it!

A New Set of Dice!

This might seem like an obvious one, but for me, a new set of dice gets me revved up and ready for my next session. I’ve had a tonne of different dice over the years and chop and change, depending on my mood.

There are plenty of dice sets available online, but I created my own line of themed sets to really help get into character! You can check them out here!

In the same vein, if you’re not sure what kind of dice set you want, you can always get a mystery bag that comes with a dice bag too! Some of the dice that you can get are really cool! – Check them out!

Mini Dice Keyring Set

So, first things first. I fell in love with this when I first seen it! What a unique item that is both practical and lets people know that you are a D&D fan!

This awesome D20 chaped keyring is fully metal, but hollow. Inside are a mini set of metal dice, fun to use on the go, or if you like to roleplay, why not use the tiny dice if you are rolling for a familiar or small animal?!

A Decision Maker!

Okay, this one really is the gift for a D&D player when you just really don’t know what else to get. In essence, this is just a coin… but on each side it has either YES or NO. Although this seems like a daft one, it’s actually really useful for when your group is split between two plans. Instead of planning the two scenarios for hours (then not sticking to the plan anyway… sorry we all do it!), you can flip a coin and leave it up to the D&D gods to choose!

It’s cheap, it’s cheerful, and its actually a really cool item to have at the table. Check it out here!

Deck of Many Things!

Okay, so you could just use a standard set of playing cards and roleplay that they are cool mysterious cards, OR you could actually get yourself a set of cool mysterious cards!

These cards are pretty sweet. They don’t require you to look up what card is equal to the correct card in the game, it just tells you what it is! The artwork is great and they are really cheap! Really there is no excuse not to get these!
